CNC Machined Parts First Piece Inspection Process

May 10, 2024

Before the first piece is sent to the QA department for inspection, the operator must first conduct a "self-inspection", check the product appearance and size, and fill in the self-inspection record.

The operator sends the production order, drawings, process cards, and self-inspection records together with the product to the QA inspector for special inspection. The main items of the first piece inspection include:

  • Check whether the production order, drawings, process cards, self-inspection records and products are consistent and whether there are any confusions.
  • Whether the appearance of the sample meets the requirements: no defects, no scratches, no burrs, no dirt, no missing work, no deformation.
  • Whether the materials used for the sample meet the specified requirements.
  • Whether the actual quality characteristics of the first product after processing meet the requirements specified in the drawings or technical documents.

After the QA inspector completes the inspection, he/she shall fill in the shipment inspection report, affix a qualified label and mark the first product that has passed the inspection, and keep it until the processing of this shift or a batch of products is completed (all first products must be kept as samples for comparison with subsequent products to see if the process has changed, and marked with a marker "√" to indicate that the first product has passed the inspection).

If the first product fails the inspection, the cause shall be found out, measures shall be taken, and the product shall be reprocessed and inspected after troubleshooting. It can only be determined as the first product after passing the inspection. The main problem points shall also be recorded in the "First Product Handover Book". When serious abnormalities are found (such as the structure does not match the drawing), they shall be reported to the quality engineer, and the quality engineer shall track the abnormal closure.

Note: For the resubmitted parts, QA shall re-inspect and confirm the product according to the first product requirements and attach a report (including the first product and process inspection report).
