The difference between sheet metal and stamping parts

May 12, 2024

Different quantity

  • Sheet metal is a prototype or small batch production. To be precise, it is a proofing, and the quantity is relatively small. If a mold is opened, the cost of the mold cannot be recovered. Stamping is mass production and things with precision requirements. If the output is relatively large, it is necessary to open a mold for stamping.

Different processes

  • Sheet metal parts are metal sheet parts made by workers using simple equipment such as hammers to manually hit. The characteristics are low efficiency, the quality of parts is manually controlled, and it is not stable enough, but the cost is low. It is used for small batch production or trial production.
  • Stamping parts are metal sheet parts stamped by dies and presses. The characteristics are high efficiency, the quality of parts is controlled by the mold, and the stability is strong, but the cost is high, and it is used for mass production.

Different processes

  • Stamping parts rely on presses and dies to apply external forces to plates, strips, pipes and profiles, so that they produce plastic deformation or separation, thereby obtaining the required shape and size of the workpiece. Stamping and forging belong to plastic processing, collectively known as forging. The blanks for stamping are mainly hot-rolled and cold-rolled steel plates and strips.
  • Sheet metal is a comprehensive cold processing technology for thin metal plates, including shearing, punching/cutting/compounding, folding, welding, riveting, splicing, forming, etc. Its most notable feature is that the thickness of the same part is consistent. The products processed by sheet metal technology are called sheet metal parts. The sheet metal parts referred to in different industries are generally different, and are mostly used for assembly.
